    • add Dropbox interface to link DB to web-stored files

I've linked my local pdf store, that Mendeley indexes, to Dropbox - https://www.getdropbox.com/referrals/NTk5NzE0Mjk - because that synchronises my PDFs across the many PCs I work on, and allows me web-access to them from anywhere else, too. A way to link from Mendeley to my Dropbox store would be great - perhaps the field that stores local links to PDFs could also take URLs?

The short answer is not to use Dropbox and Mendeley to try to sync the same set of files, in the same location between two PCs. If you want to keep a set of files in sync between two PCs, use either Dropbox or Mendeley but don’t use both – at least, not with the current version of Mendeley.

What you can do is separate out the files you want to sync – put your papers in Mendeley and let it sync them and put work-in-progess papers, experimental data and other information in Dropbox.

The problem with having Mendeley and Dropbox trying to sync the same folder is that Mendeley on system A makes a change (eg. renaming a file), Dropbox syncs that over to the other computer and then the file link on the other computer gets broken – so Mendeley will re-download the file on the next sync.

      • Advanced Search, Boolean Operators & search-result ordering

        1) Currently there isn't any "Advanced Search" option to search by specific fields such as "Authors", "Year", "Journal" etc, much like in the Web of Science search. While it is possible to use field codes such as "Author:", etc, this would make searching a lot more user friendly

        2) I would like to have the ability to use BOOLEAN operators for searches (like AND, OR).

        3) Lastly, it would be nice to have more options with how searches are ordered. For example if I search "nanoscale", I get a list of all documents containing the word nanoscale. However this listing…

          1) This is currently possible, although not very intuative: you can find more searching options here: http://www.mendeley.com/faq/#advanced-search However, we realise this is not very intuative and are looking to improve this in a future version.

          2) The boolean operators such as AND/OR work as expected in Mendeley 1.6, although there are improvments in 1.7 (to be released later in 2012).

          3) This has been logged with our Developement Team for a future version.

        • Warn of duplicate Citation Key

It is currently possible to enter a Citation Key that is already in use. This is extremely dangerous for anyone using bibtex since it can lead to confusion and incorrect citations. The interface should at least warn of the duplication, and ideally fix it by appending a letter at the end of the key (e.g. Smith98a). [Note: The Citation Key is normally not visible. It has to be manually enabled by going into Tools -> Options -> Metadata Fields.]

          • Allow italic formatting in metadata

Species names must be italicized yet no character formatting is allowed when manually editing the metadata. This request is especially important for the Title and Keyword fields. When exporting the citation, the italic formatting should be maintained.

            • Year field should allow for multiple years

Some journals are published over several years so that the proper citation would be, eg., Smith (2005-2006). Blah. Journal of Blah. Mendeley does no seem to accept 2005-2006 and similar in the Year field.

              • add export function for relative file location of pdf files on hard drive. (migration from pc to pc)

If i create my database on one computer, i would like to be able to just copy the whole directory containing my pdfs to another computer. When i use my mendeley desktop version on the computer where the database was not created, it would be nice to have a possibility to just link these files again to the metadata created. I think it would be a good idea, that you have an export function of your relative directory structure of your imported pdf. Then you could import this on different pcs and just point to the main directory of your…

                    • Allow users to have a common directory structure on multiple machines to sync libraries > 500MB

When trying to sync libraries on multiple machines with Mendeley desktop, you lose the links in the metadata to the pdf files. If your library is over 500MB, it would be nice to be able to backup your pdf files to your other computer, and point Mendeley to your base directory with the same sub-directory structure as your main machine and have all the links to the pdf's still work.

                      • make citeulike syncing two-way

The one-way syncing isn't much use on its own: is it better just to use CiteUlike on its own, or to wait for two-way syncing?

                        • filter documents by TYPE

Add a "filter by type" to Mendeley Desktop

                          Rationale:
I just recently had to provide statistics about my group's publication behaviour, i.e. number of journals, conference proceedings etc. and noticed that it is actually very difficult to retrieve this information from Mendeley

                          • subscript-superscript

There should be provision to use the subscript and superscript letter in the title and Abstract tab. Otherwise it creats a great problem while creating the Bibliography. Endnotes and Ref-works have this option. however they dont have the option to use symbol in the title of the paper. So it would be bonus if symbole can be used in addition to the subscipt and superscript letter in those tabs.

This has been raised with our Development Team to investigate for future versions of Mendeley. We are currently working on new and exciting features for Mendeley and are only a relatively small team, but hope to look into implementing this feature at some time in the future.

                            • sort order of publications in web library

the web version of the library always sorts the publications alphabetically in the title, it would be nice to be able to change that option, and be able to sort publications by date, date added, authors, journal, most frequently read (by yourself and others), most citations, etc...

                              • Non-english language in bibliography: quote order in text

I use Mendeley for articles in Russian language too. Most of my articles have bilingual bibliography. Common rule for Russian journals: put Russian language first, then other languages. Today Mendeley can make mix: qoutes in Russian an English are mixed. Please, make it possible to mark language of quots, abd sort bibliography: non-latin (Russian) first, English - second. I think, native language can be first not only in Russia. So this feature can help many non-english users.

Currently all my paper journals are filed by EndNote record number, I would really like to at least be able to import them. Even better would be to have someway of incorporating them into a new numbering system with a Mendeley number so I can continue with them under Mendeley

                                    • Add metadata field for Call Number

Many researchers keep files with hard copies of articles. It would be useful to have a custom "call number" to enable them to find the location of reprints. The call number field exists in most bibliographical management packages, but that field currently does not import into Mendeley.
