You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.

  1. Popup tooltip with referenced paper name, authors, etc. when mouse is over reference brackets.

When you are reading a paper in PDF viewer and you see a reference brackets in form [Author09] or sometimes even worse in format [48] it would be very usefull to see what is that referenced paper actually about. For this reason a tooltip with referenced paper informations could popup after mouse over event over those brackets and even better a left click could bring you to the referenced paper when it's in the library.

    • Flag the Documents With Different Symbols

Can you, please add the ability to flag the documents with different symbols? (not just star them)
For example, when I print the documents, I wish that instead of adding a keyword "printed", I could just "star" it with a different symbol (similar to how you can do that in an email client :-))

      • acm webimport: wrong metadata

I tried to import http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1094811.1094849 which is recognized well by citeulike, but mendeley classifies this as a journal paper, where the bibtex from portal.acm.org clearly says, it is inproceedings. Thus, the quality of the acm webimport needs to improve.

        • Do a rework of document types

I have a couple of problems with the current document types implementation. Therfor some suggestions:

          * it isn't always clear what a document type stands for. For example: what is a hearing? Is that a presentation? What is a case?

SUGGESTION: Provide (e.g. by way of a yellow popup, similar to the author name suggestions) a brief explanation of each document type.

          * There are quite a lot of document types available. However, some are lacking. For example: "white paper", "conference presentation". Other people will have need for still other types. I assume (see my previous point above) the 'generic'…

For example, automatically generating missing citation keys based on AuthorYear, rename pdfs based on citation key, show citation key in the main window, and find duplicates (mentioned elsewhere).

1 – Citation keys are automatically generated if missing on export to BibTeX

2 – It is possible to show the citation key in the Details pane by enabling it under Options → Document Details

3 – Using the citation key to rename files in the file organizer is not implemented. This has been logged with our development team.

4 – A warning when multiple documents have the same key is not implemented, but you can now search by citation key using “citationkey:”

                • Export in RDF, using the Bibliography ontology

It would be great if mendeley had an export option into RDF, using the bibliography ontology: http://wiki.bibliontology.com/index.php/Main_Page. Similar systems, like Zotero or Bibsonomy already do it or plan to do it...

                  • Sync file links when file is present on second computer

I've created a Mendeley database with about 400 PDF file links on one machine and I'd like the file links to work on the other machine, without having to have Mendeley have to upload and then download the PDF if that file is already in the right spot on a second or third machine.

I already keep folders of several computers in sync using a P2P program called sugarsync (there are many others such as live mesh, syncplicity, etc). I am telling it to sync the folder where Mendeley is placing my catalogued PDF files.
                    I have used Mendeley to…

                      • Improve filtering by author and journal

Consider adding the option to filter by multiple authors/journals such that when highlighting X number of authors/journals Mendeley Desktop returns all files that match ANY (as opposed to ALL) of the search criteria. For example if I want to look at al my articles from Genomics and from Genome Research I could filter and ctrl-click both of those in the publications list, and have Mendeley return all articles from either journal. this makes more intuitive sense to me. Basically: give us and "AND" and and "OR" function in filtering. Thanks!

                        • use DOI to spot and merge duplicates from citeulike sync

At the moment, when syncing from citeUlike, documents with that come in, that have a DOI that matches a document already in my Mendeley library, get duplicated. It should be very straightforward to spot the DOI duplication and merge the info: at least, to import any tags and notes, and ask the user about any other inconsistencies

My research lab tries to maintain a central repository but it's difficult. We would be able to all sync our local database to the same pdf repository and automatically stay up to date on what everyone else is reading.

                                  • temporary citations and RTF scan

It would be nice to be able to insert temporary text citations (i.e. something along the lines of {Smith et al., J Neurosci, 2009}) which will on demand be scanned by Mendeley and turned into proper citation with bibliography attached.

This is especially useful for keeping references intact across applications; i.e. using applications like Devon Think to store notes, Google Docs for collaborative writing, etc.

                                    • Add more libraries

Now we can only have one Library for all the references. Adding multiple libraries will allow to have a better organization of the references. To organize more than 2,000 references belonging to completely different projects (journal papers, books, software, magazines, etc) need a better tool than collections. Endnote has the option to create multiple libraries with multiple collections inside. Thanks

                                      • "Read priority"

Add a "read priority" label (may be priorities 1-10). User can sort by priorities to see which papers to read first.

Sometimes I download papers and think that I have to read this. But I forget later. If this tag is there, I can see which docs I need to read sorted by their priorities assigned by me at the time of download. You could also add a deadline (or "read by this date") associated with this feature. This will help user to plan his readings. Probably all the readings could be shown in a calendar like format.

                                        This will…

Create "smart" categories (like Papers software, on MacOS) that would search (with logical operators) for keywords within (selectable) author, title, abstract fields and automatically populate the categories with found articles, without manual intervention. Smart Categories cannot be populated manually and they can coexists with normal categories.

This is something that we have discussed: we have a ticket open related to this one for a ‘Saved Search’ option which you can use to search for files by clicking a saved search criteria.

Additionally we have a ticket open for a ‘Recently Viewed’ option under a different ticket. If this is the feature you are voting for, please vote here instead: http://feedback.mendeley.com/forums/4941-general/suggestions/220568-recently-opened-documents as this forum is only for Smart Categories/Saved Search.
