  1. Import new entry using bibtex schema

import a new entry for publications AND / OR references using the full bibtex entry (as can be found e.g. on citeseerx).
This could be in the form of an additional tab with the full bibtex reference (cf. jabref)

This is something that has been discussed with the Development Team. At time of writing, if you have a URL which contains nothing but the BibTeX information (see http://rmp.aps.org/export/RMP/v83/i3/p907_1?type=bibtex , thanks Daniel), you can copy the URL and paste it directly into Mendeley which will import the information (the same way it does if you copy and paste an online PDF URL). Importing with just BibTeX is on the cards for a future version, but there is a suitable work around.

    • Add ability to search in just the notes

Sometimes I want to find a paper I read before, and I know roughly what I said about it in my notes. Unfortunately the normal search searches in the article bodies as well and so it takes a bit of effort to find the right paper.

It would be really useful to be able to search in just the notes, ignoring the text in the articles themselves.

You can search the document’s notes (the white text field that appears at the top of the Notes tab on the right hand side) but not annotations in PDFs yet. The ability to search on ‘sticky notes’ or ‘annotations’ has been raised with our development team.

      • Include integration with WordPerfect

Unlike EndNote (which abandoned everything but Word years ago), why not keep Mendeley flexible so users have choices? Integration with WordPerfect as well as Word and Open Office would be great.

        • Multiple notes on a single article with granular formatting

Often times one article contains several important concepts or pieces of information which may relate to multiple/different projects or topics. It would be helpful if notes about each of these pieces of information could be stored, formatted, shared, and tagged separately.

Here is one possible application of this sort of note granularity:

It would be nice if there was an option for notes to be formatted as GeneRIF entries (i.e. short 255 character statemtents about a gene's function). Mendeley could offer an option to submit a note to GeneRIF (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/projects/GeneRIF/GeneRIFhelp.html). This would allow Mendeley users to help add…

          • Allow for specification of primary author

This will be particularly useful for the new organization and renaming features as it will enable the user to specify which author to consider when creating a folder/file and (particularly for sorting) avoid creating multiple folders with the same primary author but different co-authors.

Maybe this could be implemented as a drop-down box of authors to choose from with the default being the first author on the paper. However, it is sometimes the case that the primary or corresponding author is not listed first and it would be useful for the user to adjust for that.

            • Show unique identifier as number next to every entry

I have a printout copy of many of my PDF files. Each printout is labeled with a unique number on the top right corner and stored in a ordered way.
Whenever I look for a paper:
              1. I open my digital library organizer
              2. I search the paper and find what is the number associated to it
              3. Go to my paper library and pick paper number N.

I wish this could be done with Mendeley (sounds pretty easy to implement)

              • more elaborate academic disciplines

maybe people can but in here some missing categories. i am sure there are some ontologies around for academic fields, maybe check a library catalogue:

                biological science -> neuroscience

                interdisciplinar fields
                neuroinformatics
                computational neuroscience
                neuromorphic engineering

Thanks for the suggestions. We have an ongoing ticket with our Development Team for adding new disciplines. I have added all the requests below to the ticket, for future requests for additional academic disciplines please e-mail support@mendeley.com, specifying what discipline you would like to be added and what sub-disciplines (if appropriate) and say you would like it adding to the WWW-6685 ticket. Thanks.

                • Improve import of references from PDFs

Depending on the format of the references I see great performance of the automatic improt of references in some cases and poor performance (spurious fields, titles split across fields etc).

It would be great if I was able to cite my references not only in Word, but also in Powerpoint (when I prepare presenations), and in Wordpress (for blogposts) and in e-mails

This has been raised with our Development Team, however, we are only a relatively small team and are working on other new and exciting features in the short term.

                    • Improve quality of automatic metadata extraction

Improve the quality of the automatic metadata extraction; add automatic retrieval of metadata from arXiv, PubMed etc.

                      • Attach PDFs to metadata in Mendeley Desktop by drag & drop

Dragging a pdf to a reference already in Mendeley should attach the pdf to that reference, instead of creating a duplicate of the reference. The process of opening the reference and browsing for it, is way too long. As checking if the reference already exist could be complicated (you judge that), just link it to whatever reference we point on when dragging.

Unfortunately this had to be dropped from 1.10 due to time constraints. We’re committed to fixing this though, and it’s one of our top priorities for future releases. Apologies, these are the realities of software development sometimes.

                        • In-program PubMed search & Metadata Retrieval

An in-program browser where users can go to PubMed (or a specific Journal's website) and search an article. On downloading it, Mendeley will automatically extract the Metadata and possibly archive the file.

Seeing some of the possibilities for this at the moment, I would be quite keen to get this implemented. It has been raised with our Developers.

                          • Add dedicated for JStor articles

Mendeley seems very poor at extracting metadata from articles downloaded from Jstor, presumably becasue of the additional Jstor page tagged on the front.

Perhaps Jstor articles could be recognised as such, and parsed differently?

                            • Accumulate and show Pareto or statistics on references

It would be great to accumulate and show a Pareto chart or statistics from references to rank the most cited works in my library. This would allow me to prioritize searches by weighting "hits" or date etc. Supporting this would be a "master list" of references not contained in the library (with duplicates counted and removed from the master view).

                                • Mark those PDF files which can not be search.

Some PDFs do not allow for search within text. This obviously leads to poor metadata extraction, but may in the future cause other problems even after the metadata has been corrected manually. If one searched their PDFs for a particular fact nothing would be found if it was in a paper which was not searchable. It, therefore, would be helpful to know which papers were not searchable so the fact and its citation could be tracked down manually.

                                  • Add preview of the first PDF pages to the metadata pane.

This was in 0.5.x and was very useful.

It should show the first page of the PDF (possibly flashblock-style to improve speed), with the option of navigating to later pages (sometimes the first page is a useless copyright notice).

Would be good if you can use it to click on the DOI (if it wasn't detected).

                                    • Make references within a paper in the library searchable

Some times you want to search for a reference you know is in one of your papers, although you can't remember in which paper. Instead of manually going through all the papers and looking at the reference list of each, it would be great if Mendeley could search all papers in you library for the reference you are looking for.

                                      • Automatically generate email alerts for new papers

Generate searchs for new papers based on keywords generated from your library. This could be either set manually to search pubmed for a pre-defined set of keywords every week, or automatically generated based on the types of things already present in the library/a predefined subset of the library. The user would then be able to add/reject suggestions from the generated list(s) to the main library

                                        • More Customisable Table View in Mendeley Desktop

The ability to hide, add, and drag into different orders, columns in the table view would be great.
