What can we do to help your research?

Here you can suggest and vote on improvements for future Mendeley releases.

If you have a suggestion regarding a specific part of Mendeley, please use the links on the right hand side of the window to add your suggestion to the corresponding area.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. filter for unread documents on ipad

This would be very helpful since there's no way of telling which documents I've read and which I haven't in the ipad app

We need to change the behaviour of what constitutes a paper as being marked as “Read” on the desktop client first, and make sure we’re syncing this.

While it’s not currently planned, we’ll keep this under review and revisit once the desktop behaviour is fixed.

  2. Specify different paths for Bibtex export

It would be great to be able to specify different paths when I export each collection to a single .bib file. That way I can assign the file directly to my LaTeX working folder.

  3. Import EndNote Groups

I want to switch from EndNote to Mendeley, but I have all of my citations and notes in EndNote organized in Groups. Is there a way to preserve this organization when exporting, so that my documents are still in folders?

  4. Simply simplify BibTeX via clipboard/form

Maybe I miss something, but most of my sources have BibTeX support, so I import citations this way: 1. get BibTeX 2. copy BibTeX snippet to clipboard 3. open file 4. paste BibTeX snippet 5. save file 6. choose "File add files..." in Mendeley 7. choose the just saved file.

Obviously this is annoying, and could be simplified but supporting a "Pase BibTeX" command in Mendeley client, which just parses the clipboard's content. Alternatively you could add a form to type in BibTeX data

  5. Allow for author(year) style for some references

For some references, the author's name should be placed out of parenthesis (e.g. Rose(2000) discusses this issue ...)
This cannot be done by changing the style since that will affect all the references in the paper.

  6. Update pdf file edited by external programs

When pdf file is opened and edited by external programs the change is not stored in the file.
MENDELEY seems to check the file name but not check the difference of file itself when updating the database.
I suggest you to update the pdf file by checking difference in pdf file itself!

  7. do not disable watched folders after Mendeley crash

When Mendeley crashes the watched folders option is automatically disabled. Upon starting up the program you then need to go back into the options and "enable" the watched folders. When Mendeley crashes, the watched folders option should not be automatically disabled (since often this isn't even the reason for the crash).

  8. accept citations from UpToDate.

UpToDate is one of, if not the most, used medical reference websites. It's kind of an encyclopedia and kind of a website. They have a suggestion for how it should be cited. Right now any time I want to include it in my citations I have to manually enter it. This sucks!

  9. Use the adsabs database as a catalog

The SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System at http://adsabs.harvard.edu/ is an extensive astrophysics catalogue. Records are indicated by Bibliographic Codes and DOI are often linked - this would be a rich source of auto-extracting metadata similar to the arXiv.

  11. Indicate which entries have notes attached

When viewing the list of citations as a table, there is no indication which entries have notes attached. Therefore, it is impossible to sort that table according to which entries have notes.

  12. Mac: make it so closing the Mendely window does not quit the program

To declutter my desktop I often close the main window of a program. But only a few programs (Matlab, Mendeley) have the unfortunate feature of quitting when their main window is closed.

  14. Fix Bug: Crashing when in fullscreen with 2nd screen

    I experience a crash when
    — I have Mendeley displaying an article in fullscreen mode
    — Use a second monitor to do something else

(Mac OS X 10.6.5, Mendeley 0.9.8.2, error report just sent)

  16. Grab PMID during Google Scholar search, possibly option to import instead

When a Google Scholar search is run, some data is updated automatically. However, Google Scholar returns mediocre results and often (in neuroscience anyway) provides a pubmed link with the structure:

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/<PMID>

Currently, the pubmed ID is not captured. For example, the search:

"Localization of dopamine D2 receptor mRNA and D1 and D2 receptor binding in the rat brain and pituitary"

    clearly includes the pubmed link:

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2143777

but this ID is not captured by the default search. This Pubmed data (importable once the ID is entered) is vastly superior to Google Scholar results. At minimum, it'd be great to capture…

  17. let the reader view all the notes s/he has made

For people who add notes to their .pdfs, it would be really convenient if they could view all notes at once. This function would be similar to MSWord's View Comments functionality. That way, a reader can see their thoughts right away without having to click on each note icon.

  18. Stop auto-creating "Documents" folder

Mendeley Desktop has no business creating folders for me, but it seems to create a "~/Documents" folder every time I run it (linux 64-bit). Can this behaviour be stopped, please?

  19. add notes with latex-style formulas

I often write down explanatory calculations while reading an article. If I could add them to notes inside my documents in Mendeley Desktop, that would be very helpful.
So I suggest adding support for latex-style formulas to notes.

  20. Avoid duplicated BibTeX entries when a paper exists both in "My Library" and a shared collection

If I drag a paper from my library to a shared collection it gets copied to that collection so that I now have two copied (why don't you just link?). This also means that I have two BibTeX entries for that paper.
