  1. Allow images, tables etc. in Notes field in Mendeley Desktop

Currently, the Notes field in Mendeley Desktop only supports text with bold/italic formatting. The Notes field should also support images, tables, bullet points etc.

Mendeley will auto-convert lines starting with asterisks or dashes into bullet point lists for display. Other features for tables and images have been flagged to our Development Team, however, anything too involved with the notes, such as images, will dramatically increase the amount of time it takes for a

    • The sort order of publications

Mendeley desktop always sorts publications in order of authors' names when I launch it, but I like to sort them in order of the date I added.

It would be great if Mendeley desktop remembers which metadata to use for sorting publications.

      • rank documents

Among all documents I have in database not all have the same importance or worth reading.
It would be nice to have ranking system, especially for shared groups to point the attention of other people in the group to the paper.

Similarly, I tag mainly the interesting papers that I would like to find easily later. Having a highlighting og those papers in the full list might be useful.

        • Management of text excerpts

I am missing functions to manage my text excerpts. The program Citavi offers the possibilities to copy text excerpts of documents directly into the database. Then you build up the structure for your own publication and sort the excerpts into that structure. This way you can easily refer to direct excerpts or interesting thoughts in your own text.
In Citavi it is a wonderful workflow that makes it hard for me to switch to Mendeley.

          • Additional file types (.doc, .txt, .htm) in Mendeley Desktop

At the moment, automatic metadata extraction only works on PDF files. Add support for Word documents, .txt, .html and other files.

Although you can currently input any file into Mendeley, actually extracting metadata from other non-PDF formats will take longer – since for metadata extraction Mendeley needs to be able to extract the content in reading order and/or make use of embedded metadata.

            • Export BibTeX to clipboard

Currently, Mendeley Desktop seems to only allow for exporting, e.g., BibTeX records, to files. This is inconvenient when one is working on a research paper with an attached BibTeX file, where entries need to be pasted. It would be very good to be able to simply export a BibTeX record to the clipboard and paste it in the BibTeX file by just typing Ctrl-V (or any of the equivalent keystrokes).

The solution that was suggested is not good enough. We will revise it and add a proper export to clipboard option.
                -———————————————
                Previous solution suggested:

You can perform this by first going to View > Citation Styles > View More. From here, locate the BibTex style and install and use it.

Now, when you select items, pressing Ctrl+C will copy a BibTex formatted citation to your clipboard.

              • Full-text search in My Library on Mendeley Web

At the moment, there is no search functionality in My Library on Mendeley Web. It should support full-text search like in Mendeley Desktop.

This has been suggested to our Web Team, however, it would be very difficult to implement and may be quite time consuming for our relatively small team. However, there are plans to completely overhaul the online library which may introduce a similar feature.

                • Minimize Mendeley Desktop to Notification area

For Windows: Would it be possible to have the option to keep Mendeley running in the background and when minimized, put into the notification area (bottom right hand corner)?

                  • Create Document Group based on import folder

In Mendeley Desktop: After adding many files, it is hard to put them into groups because it is not possible to sort the entries after the folder they came from. Thus, when you import an entire folder of PDFs, this should automatically create a document group with the same name as the folder from which the files were imported.

It would be nice if we could search external databases (ACM, IEEE, arXiv, PubMed) from within Mendeley Desktop, and be able to download the papers.

                      • Three "notes" fields per record, not one

One for the author's abstract (if any), one for public notes by the collector about the article and one for the collector's private notes about the article (which might include candid or critical thoughts they would not want to share). Meanwhile by default the "notes" field should only contain the abstract. When I imported from my Endnote XML file it imported my (candid) "notes" field in preference to the abstract when both were available.

                        • "Update file location" dialogue

When I move the file or change its directory name, the program loses track of it and understandably so. However, when I click on the pdf icon in the program it would be nice if it displayed something like the following: "Cannot locate file". Then it could display a window showing the current directory with a browse button to allow user to reestablish the link.

Quite often, there are situations where I first add a document to my mendeley, then later on, I have access to a better version of the citation, and it would be useful to be able to update the citation if it already exists in my library.

                                  Two examples of this:
1)I have a load of things I imported from pubmed a year or two back. At that point, the pubmed import didn't support full names. Now I need to update them for an article that needs full names in citations. The new web importer supports full names, but there is…

                                        • Dragged entries are dark and almost unable to read

When dragging an entry in Mendeley Desktop (Windows 10 x64), the dragged entry box is really dark and barely readable.

I got no skins/themes whatsoever installed so it should not be because of such things. Mendeley version is 1.16-dev4
