You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Author name suffix (Jr. Sr. II, III etc.)

If Mendeley can recognise name suffixes such as William Henry Gates III or Jr. Sr. it would be useful for citation.

    • add 'workshop paper' to document type list

In my field, emerging research is often published in 'workshop papers' which are not part of the archival conference proceedings but which are more official than the 'working paper' category.

      • Pen tool for annotations

Make a pen tool for drawing free-hand annotations in the built-in pdf reader. Or at least make tools for making circles and arrows. I love drawing on my pdfs!

        • Ability to create custom Document Types

Different people care about different types of documents. Instead of trying to add every possible type centrally, it would be useful if users could add new document types and rename / delete existing ones.

This is on our roadmap for this year. It’s a two step process. First we need to replace the hard-coded document types in Mendeley Desktop, and their field mappings to a more flexible system that reads from a standardised config file. This can then be shared between Desktop, iOS, and third party applications. Once this is in place, then we plan to update the document types to be in line with EndNote’s supported types, as well as consider suggestions for other popular reference types.

          • shortcut to add entry manually

I often add entries to my library using PMIDs. So, I frequently use the 'Add Entry Manually' button. Is there a keyboard shortcut to summon this command?
If there isn't any, I think it is required.

            • Batch metadata lookup from Internet

It would be great if the DOI lookup and the "Search by Title" can be requested for more than one PDF at a time.

              • fix entry of accented/special characters on Mac OS

Whenever I try to enter accented characters, for example, in the Author field, I regularly get additional unwanted characters.

                For example, Bardy, Benoît G

                Assume I start with Benoit

I select the 'i', delete it. When I hit the option-i, I get the 'hat', as usual for Mac input. Then, when I hit 'i' i get the proper character, î, but then, when I scroll the cursor to the right or exit the field, I get additional 'i's after - Benoîit

Change de color of the caracters in content pane when an item is selected. Black on blue is not a good idea. Or maybe let the color to be a setting.

                    • bibtex integration should be bidirectional with .bib file

Integration with a BibTex file shoud go both ways: if I update my library in Mendeley, I get a update .bib file, and if I update a .bib file, I get my library updated.
We should have the possibility to choose a .bib file to use like this.

Also, I noticed that many latex characters aren't correctly parsed, like í (\'i).

This has been logged with our Development Team. However, we are only a small team who are looking into new and exciting features, and there are many difficulties involved with this sort of change.

                      • change "year" field to more flexible "date" field

"Year" is an inadequate field for a lot of citations in, for example, the field of History. It is not uncommon for "September 2006" to be a recommended citation form, or "November/December 2005", or spanning years. More importantly, for things like citations of newspaper articles, a simple year is *not* sufficient -- exact dates must be cited for them to be found by others if the articles are not online (common, again, for historians). The current "year" field is too inflexible and the way in which it quietly deletes any more complicated information you put into it is really unacceptable.…

There seem to be several requests here.

                          1. It is possible to import months/days by going into ‘View’ —> ‘Document Details’ and ticking ‘Months’ and ‘Day’ for the relevant document type. Citation styles can be changed to incorporate these through the CSL editor in 1.7 (due for release later in 2012).

                          2. Ranges of dates (eg. “1822-24”), these are currently not supported.

                          3. Dates which are approximate or have some other qualification (eg. “~1700”)

                          4. The ability to specify separate dates for the original publication and the edition that you are citing.

                          5. Allow papers to be “in press” and it is also necessary to be able to put “s.d.” (sine datum) or “n.d.” (no date) and equivalents in other languages. Great to hear you are working on this.

These have been raised with Development for future iterations of Mendeley.

                        • Search improvements

One of the features i find very useful is the full text search in the library view. However when a pdf is opened (by double clicking on the search result) it would be nice if the open pdf file automatically performed the search also. At the moment I have to change the search string (delete the last character) to get it to search in the pdf.

Also displaying the number of occurrences in the file and current occurrences (e.g. 4/5) next to the forward/back buttons would be nice.

When importing .bib file created by JabRef it would be nice to have JabRef groups appearing as Mendeley Collections (in My Library). And the other way round: when `Enable BibTeX syncing' is on, it would be nice if Mendeley Collections info was written into the .bib file in such way that JabRef can read it as its Groups

                                • PDFs should be attached with paths relative to a user-configurable base path

If it would be possilbe to specify a document base path, all linked PDF paths could be specified relative to this base path. JabRef has similar functionality.

One of the advantages is that one can then move easily between different machines (not migrate, but e.g. work on one during the day and another during the evening), synchronising PDF directories by means of a tool such as unison or other file synchronisation, and mendeley would keep finding all attachments, as they would be at the same relative paths.

This is especially useful if the different computers are running different operating systems.…

                                    Hello,

Mendeley has support for djvu/ps/txt/odt by manualy add but we need support like for PDF:
                                    1. Create notes and highlighting.
                                    2. View djvu/ps/chm by internal viewer.

                                    Thanks a lot.

We are aware of this request, however, as we are just a small team we are working on many exciting new features to improve Mendeley. Our Development Team are aware of this request, but you can view such documents in the native viewer at this time.

                                    • Allow users to choose column headings in my library, using fields from document details.

The column headings in the My Library view are static, and there is currently no way to adjust them according to users' preferences. Users should be able to select from a pick-list of fields that can be displayed in the library view. All of the fields from 'document details' should be available as columns.

Columns should be moveable (left, right), and sort order should depend on column order (ie. to sort first by author's last name, then by firstname, then by date, then by title, arrange those columns from left to right).

This has been started but there have been difficulties in the viewer which means it has taken longer than anticipated. We are working on implementing it in a future version of Mendeley.

                                      • NP 405, please

I'm portuguese and I need the NP 405 style on citation. It's possible?

                                        Thanks.

                                        • reference tab numbers

For papers with a numerical citation scheme (eg. [1,2] etc) It would be very helpful if the reference tab had these numbers next to the corresponding references. This would mean not having to scroll down to the reference list to identify each citation.
